Some Of Us
We’re not all monsters,
Not all determined to be selfish and heartbreakers.
You can still protect yours
And see the light in mine.
I’ve been broken too,
With trying times,
Rushing to gather my pieces
Before they spin the block and demonize,
Manipulate the signs
of the road
For you to continue to pay the toll
That they demand.
We’re not all heathens,
Not all hell-bent on destruction,
Inwardly seething,
Or consistently sharpening our blade
To cut deep your feelings,
Extract your soul,
And replace with demons,
Enact control,
And impose by feeding
On what’s left.
Compliments to the chef,
He surely cooked up something…
Defeating.
We’re not all villains,
Not all seeking to whittle you down to a nub,
Displace your trust
With disgust,
Influx of kisses mixed with hugs
To deceive,
For you to believe
It’s all under the guise of love.
Some of us are just trying to enjoy the way the wind makes you smile as it streams across your face,
Offer you the last bite,
Because it’s your favorite dish
And the taste
Takes you back to a childhood place.
Some of us mean no harm.
It’s not a ruse or charm
When we want the same things.
Some of us take responsibility,
Hold accountability,
When inadvertently hurting another human being.
When some of us sharpen our sword,
It’s to defend and protect,
To shield you from harm,
To disarm,
Not you,
But the ones who lack respect.
Some of us just want to come home
And just be within your midst,
Admire the light brightening your eyes,
And with a finger,
Give your hair a little twist.
Some of us want love too,
And I pray that provides some hope to know you’ll never be alone.
Some of us can help you heal,
Help you breathe,
Some of us can help you cope
